Surfing and Stand-Up Paddle BoardingSurfing and stand up paddle boarding take the participant into an exhilarating, wave filled, ocean environment for outdoor activity. The thrill of harnessing wave energy motivates surfers and paddle boarders to paddle their way through waves for hours.

An overall physical fitness is a necessity to brave the power of the ocean. Muscular endurance, especially in the upper body, is crucial to battling through wave after wave, standing up on your board to ride and executing turns. Maintaining stability on the board requires a well trained core, while balance and coordination are a must to ride a wave.

To help you increase your enjoyment in or on the water, your trainer will work with you on establishing a strong aerobic fitness base. Some anaerobic conditioning will also be integrated in your program to better prepare you for spurts of paddling to catch the waves, complemented by endurance focused strength and core stability training.  Swimming is an excellent option for developing an aerobic base and sport specific muscular endurance, as the motion is very similar to paddling.

However, getting out in the ocean and paddling (even when there’s no wave) will always be the best way to prepare you for those 5-star days. Similar to snowboarding, balance boards can be used on dry land to practice and perfect balancing on a surfboard.  As with many outdoor activities, the specialized equipment and skill set for surfing and paddling are also important barriers to overcome.
